One important way to keep a marriage strong is constantly learning more about your spouse. A couple weeks ago Heidi interviewed me on her blog which turned out to be a fun date, so this morning we checked out another local coffee shop and I interviewed her. I know it will most likely get more difficult to learn about each other this way, so it's a fun experience to take advantage of at this stage in our early married life!
Today we covered everything from adjusting to our somewhat recent move to Indy to what our newlywed selves would tell our 20-years-from now selves. Enjoy!
Me: What has been the hardest part about moving to a new location?
Heidi: Getting used to the area, but I figured that out pretty quickly. Not having friends has probably been the hardest. At first it was fine, but then it hit me that I don’t have my close friends here.
Me: We’re making some.
Heidi: Yeah, we've been developing new friendships and that has been fantastic!
Me: What’s the best part about having moved here?
Getting a better job than I had. And I work later so I don’t have to wait extremely long for you to come home.
With your job being in law, what about the field of law interests you so much?
I like it because there are rules for everything. It’s very black and white, and you get to help people. And I like helping people.
What’s your favorite part about the job?
I like knowing what I’m doing. I like the organization part of it because I like to organize things. Copy and paste is my best friend!

Recap a little bit about what made your childhood unique.
I grew up in the country of Germany in a city called Heidelberg where there’s a castle. And because my name is Heidi I used to get teased about that, because Heidelberg was my city. Anyway, I grew up there as a missionary kid and my mom homeschooled us. We were actively involved in the ministry.
How does your childhood and growing up as a missionary kid affect the way you live now?
I definitely have a broader scope on humans in general and stereotyping. I tend to judge people pretty quickly, but I’ve learned to not judge people as quickly. They’re not what they seem normally at first. Growing up in a different culture, people are completely different than over here.
What is your favorite meal that I make? (haha)
Haha that was a good one! Probably your chicken quesadillas you made that one time …for yourself. So technically you didn’t make it for me. You never cook for me so...
Ok we can move on!
No we need to talk about this! Let’s talk about what meal I would like you to make for me.
OK what meal would you like me to make for you?
Tacos. You could do a pretty good job making tacos. It’s pretty easy.
What is something you wish people knew about me?
That you’re a lot geekier than you come across probably. You're really a big nerd with your computer stuff and your photography and your drawing and your podcasts. You're cool. You’re not like a weird nerd. You’re like a normal nerd. You don’t wear wire-rimmed glasses (I made you get rid of them).
[thanks Heidi]
What are you passionate about?
Adoption. I do want to adopt! I feel like every child needs a home. And I want to adopt five children.
Five?
Yeah I was going to tell you. Haha no. At least two would be good. That’s why I want to work for an adoption attorney. Which I know would be hard. But that’s what I think is cool about [our new] church because a lot of people adopt.
What’s one question you’re most frequently asked right now?

Top five things on your bucket list
Skydive, have a kid, travel to all fifty states, take you to Europe, and go on another cruise.
If you could go anywhere for the day right now where would you go?
Charleston, South Carolina
What do you value the most in our marriage?
The fact that we are so open with each other when something bothers us. I know you’ve learned to become more open and tell me when something is wrong instead of keeping it in.
As a newlywed now, what’s something you’d like to remind yourself in twenty years?
When we’re older and we talk to other newlyweds, to not be like “Oh, I miss those good old days.” I mean, sure, you can miss them, but I feel like when people find out we’re newlyweds they get kind of jealous of the newlywed stage. But they already had this time and they’re in another season of life. And when I get to that point I don’t want to come across as being jealous of newlyweds but just enjoy whatever stage of life I’m in.
What is the biggest difference between me and you? Besides our gender and height.
You’re extroverted and I’m introverted. And our thought process is completely different. You think very scattered sometimes. You think of so many different things all at once and try to figure out every single different way of solving something. But, if I’m set on one way of doing something I’ll do it that way, and if I’m focused on one thing I’m focused on that one thing normally.
When I say I’m not thinking anything, I’m really not thinking anything. And you are thinking of like ten million things.
Any last words for us?
I love coffee. I just paid fifty cents for a free refill!
